Defonte’s of Brooklyn

261 Third Avenue at 21st Street, Gramercy

I’ve been meaning to try this sandwich for awhile ever since NYC Food Guy ate it back in February (he’s my hero, in case you couldn’t tell).  It did not disappoint.

Lucy and I split the roast beef ($9.75).  I mean, we each could’ve eaten an full sandwich, but this is enormous.  (The famous Nicky Special is like… even more huge.  It was basically twice as tall as our sandwich.)

NYC Food Guy commented that he didn’t get that much roast beef… well, comparing his sandwich to ours, he got a lot more mozzarella than us  (lucky).  We saw the guys behind the counter au jus the bread (ha, as if that’s a verb!), and it was so beautiful.

Half a sandwich is perfectly satisfying portion!

Conclusion

I am so going back.  The Frank Sinatra special (some sort of steak-y sandwich) looks amazing, as does the meatball sub (four huge meatballs!).  The sandwiches are kind of expensive but the quality is so good, so if you split the sandwich in half with a friend, it’s probably worth it.  YUM.
